Eric Schmidt Says Google Will Probably Bid In FCC’s 700 MHz Auction.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

After flying his own twin-engine jet into Aspen, Colorado to attend a conference held by Washington think tank Progress & Freedom Foundation, last night Google CEO Eric Schmidt told a group of telecom and technology execs that his company will “probably” participate in the federal auction of valuable airwaves early next year.

Google, along with several other high profile technology companies has asked the FCC to put the airwaves up for grabs in support of an “open” wireless network that would be compatible with any wireless device. In response the FCC has cleared the way for a network that can work with any device, but stopped short of making the airwaves available for lease by any third party…deciding instead to put the spectrum rights up for auction.

Google said the FCC’s decision made the airwaves less appealing, but did not rule out participating in the auction. Schmidt remarked that his compay ”got the spirit of what we were asking for” in the auction rules passed last month by the Federal Communications Commission.

The 700-megahertz wireless band in question has been seen by some analysts as the last chance for new players to enter the cell phone market. The band is being made available because the television broadcasters who currently occupy the range will be moving to digital television transmission in February 2009.

Earlier this year Google announced that it was willing to bid at least $4.6 billion in the upcoming auction, but only if certain conditions requiring open access were placed on the spectrum.  Not all of Google’s conditions were met, but apparently the FCC did enough to keep them interested.

82 Year Old Adelphia Founder & Son Who Duped Investors Finally Report To Prison.

Adelphia Communications Founder John Rigas.

Justice is finally being served by the two ring leaders in the Adelphia Communications fraud case that took place between 2001-2004.

For those of you who don’t remember, Adelphia led its employees and investors to believe that all was well in la la land until a small footnote at the end of a press release caught they eyes of investors. The little footnote was the company’s way of disclosing the fact that it had accumulated billions of dollars of liabilities that it had not previously disclosed.

Those liabilities totalling over $2 billion, turned out to be funds that had been mis-used as family resources.  Needless to say investors and employees were not happy.

Tonight 82 year old John Rigas and 51 year old Timothy Rigas who were sentenced to 15 and 20 years in the penitentary respectively, will spend their first night in prison.

The father-son pair reported to a federal prison in North Carolina earlier today. They were convicted in 2004 on multiple counts of securities fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and bank fraud. Prosecutors accused the men of not being truthful about Adelphia’s financial problems, as well as using corporate funds for personal expenditures.

Before its collapse, Adelphia was one of the biggest cable television companies in the U.S.

I guess the Rigas boys should be happy they live in America and not in China where business and political leaders commit suicide when they disgrace themselves or their families.  Zhang Shuhong, CEO of a Chinese toy manufacturing company recently hung himself over a far less intentional wrong-doing.

Steve Ballmer Makes Second Attempt To Convince FCC To Free Up Vacant Television Airwaves.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. The Washington Post reports that today CEO Steve Ballmer and Microsoft Corporation will try to convince U.S. regulators that vacant television airwaves can be used for wireless services without interfering with broadcast signals.

This will be Microsoft’s second attempt to convince the Federal Communications Commission to see things their way.

Microsoft is disputing the agency’s recent finding that prototype Internet devices caused static on existing broadcasts, claiming that the initial prototype was “defective,” but a new model works correctly.

Broadcasters are due to switch from analog to digital signals by early 2009.  Microsoft and others are asking the FCC to allow the unused TV airwaves to be put up for grabs.

Microsoft, Google, Intel and other tech titans have been trying to get the FCC to make the vacant airwaves available for use without a license. Broadcasters however, have expressed concerns about potential interference with their signals.
