BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer is not happy. In a case which proves that nothing is immune to the sleight of hand of Chinese manufacturers and their ability and willingness to clone any product on earth, BMW has been forced to threaten legal action over a cheap knock-off version of their popular X5 SUV.
The Chinese-made SUV which ironically enough is called CEO is almost identical in appearance to BMW’s X5…especially from the rear.
“We have already taken steps against the marketing of the CEO (SUV) in Europe. Should this car be presented at the IAA, we will look into taking further legal steps,” a BMW spokesman said.
Forbes reports that Karl Schloessl, the owner of independent importer China Automobile Deutschland said he knew nothing of the legal action, but said it might well help sales of the model.Schloessl said he is planning to sell the cars at around 100 dealerships in Germany starting in October…again proving there is no shame among the Chinese or the vendors who get rich selling their knock-off merchandise.
The BMW X5 is pictured on the left and the Chinese CEO SUV is on the right.

I think it looks like a cheap X5. The body is a total copy, I cannot believe they did that without attempting to change it slightly. Sure, the door handles don’t match and the tires look like crap on the CEO ; but it still looks almost identical to the X5 body. I smell a big, fat lawsuit. |

Your idiocy started line 1: “once you deduct r&d, capitalized assets, sales and marketing…”. Those are all part of the cost of an X5. Nevertheless, the parts, machine time and labor that go into an X5 cost well over $6,000. |

it’s nice to see the chinese doing to the europeans what the europeans did to the asians a few hundred years ago. just because europeans had mass-produced gun-powder (invented by the chinese), were extremely disciplined (gotta give them that) and wanted to get out of their wretched cold countries - they all came (down from the trees) to asia and stole/ copied/ occupied/ annhilated (that was in north america) and went back feelling quite smug about themselves. well - china and india are not the oldest civilisations for nothing. we’re sure as hell coming back and going to kick some white ass. or sell to it, as the case might more possibly be.. |

Anyone who can’t tell the different at 500 yards is blind. I can’t find a single detail which is the same between both. A picture of a sprint from the same angle would look about the same. The fact that it’s a rear quarter shot indicates that the hood and grill is substantially different too. I never thought that the BMW CEO would be so stupid. |

| Al Says: | |
| August 28th, 2007 at 4:11 pm | |
Yeah, they’re both the same, other than the chinese-made one is probably $10k cheaper. and you really think that BMW X5 is worth $60k? Most of the cost consumers pay for is for their marketing. It is entirely possible to manufacture an SUV that is equal in performance and safety and sell it for half the cost. I’m not condoning any “copy-cat” practices and I do think that the Chinese manufacturers should at least modify the bumper a little bit so that it doesn’t look exactly the same. However, I think this is beneficial for consumers in general. It enforces an “invisible” price control so that BMW, LV and Gucci’s brand name products do not get out of hand and remains affordable for the everyday consumer (and not just only to paris hilton). Otherwise, I’ll all for purchasing a A-grade replica from China or Korea. peace. |

They look similar but nowhere near the same. And I am willing to bet that the BMW is a helluva lot safer than the CEO. Not to mention the depreciation on a BMW is substantially less than other cars, including this one. And BMW also provides complete maintenance for 4yr/50K even including “wear-and-tear” items like break pads, rotors and wipers. |

Haha… you think this will force to BMW lower their prices?! Their whole slogan is building “ultimate driving machines” and that will be done at a premium price. No one NEEDS a BMW. It’s not like there aren’t more affordable cars for people with less disposable income. The people who can afford a BMW and want the quality, performance, and safety a BMW offers will continue to pay for it. The looks of the sheetmetal and plastic on the outside are only a small part of it. |

BMW should be very proud … The best acknowledgement of your superior product is when your product is been copied. As for the Chinese copycat, we know how backward China is, you have to copy an old out of production model. Just hope the Chinese copy everything, sometimes they copy the big things and to save cost, ignore the smaller things, so customers will get disappointed. Eg. BMW may have have electric buttons, but on the copycat, you get only a picture of the buttons. hahaha At the end of the day, the Chinese are just too proud, totally dishonest and far too greedy. At least, Their neighbours … Japs and Koreans car makers are putting in the hardwork and doing the right thing. |

Well, I doubt the Chinese one could be much less reliable than my real X5, with all the problems its had. And, I’d bet the Chinese manufacturer is probably more customer-oriented than BMW has been to me. When you look closely, there are LOTs of differences between the two…rear side windows, taillamps, rear bumper, tailgate, etc. etc. |
