regarding the safety concerns, yes those are valid issues but it’s just a matter of time until the chinese develop those engineering practices. if they can make semi-conductors, satellites and artificial black holes i’m sure they can figure out the great mystery of the crumple zone and unlock the puzzle of the air bag.

I think it looks like a cheap X5. The body is a total copy, I cannot believe they did that without attempting to change it slightly. Sure, the door handles don’t match and the tires look like crap on the CEO ; but it still looks almost identical to the X5 body. I smell a big, fat lawsuit.

r&d, hard assets (plants, machinery), sales and marketing are variables that vary wildly based on multiple factors such geography and cost of supporting the brand. the $6,000 i dropped is the cost of manufacture which consists of labor and materials only. for example it costs gm $12,000 to build a suburban, that cost increase over the x5 is largely due to non-competitive manufacturing practices and very high labor costs (pensions and benefits). bmw spends far more then ceo on advertising and branding, bmw exec’s get paid much more then the exec’s at ceo, bmw has much swankier offices then ceo. so why factor these costs into the cost of making the car? if you want an apples to apples comparison look at the raw manufacturing cost and start there.
btw, trust me, you don’t want to know how much it cost porche to build a 911. they’re not the most profitable car company for nothing.

Anyone who can’t tell the different at 500 yards is blind. I can’t find a single detail which is the same between both. A picture of a sprint from the same angle would look about the same.

The fact that it’s a rear quarter shot indicates that the hood and grill is substantially different too. I never thought that the BMW CEO would be so stupid.

Yeah, they’re both the same, other than the chinese-made one is probably $10k cheaper. and you really think that BMW X5 is worth $60k? Most of the cost consumers pay for is for their marketing. It is entirely possible to manufacture an SUV that is equal in performance and safety and sell it for half the cost. I’m not condoning any “copy-cat” practices and I do think that the Chinese manufacturers should at least modify the bumper a little bit so that it doesn’t look exactly the same. However, I think this is beneficial for consumers in general. It enforces an “invisible” price control so that BMW, LV and Gucci’s brand name products do not get out of hand and remains affordable for the everyday consumer (and not just only to paris hilton). Otherwise, I’ll all for purchasing a A-grade replica from China or Korea.

They look similar but nowhere near the same. And I am willing to bet that the BMW is a helluva lot safer than the CEO. Not to mention the depreciation on a BMW is substantially less than other cars, including this one. And BMW also provides complete maintenance for 4yr/50K even including “wear-and-tear” items like break pads, rotors and wipers.

Haha… you think this will force to BMW lower their prices?! Their whole slogan is building “ultimate driving machines” and that will be done at a premium price. No one NEEDS a BMW. It’s not like there aren’t more affordable cars for people with less disposable income. The people who can afford a BMW and want the quality, performance, and safety a BMW offers will continue to pay for it. The looks of the sheetmetal and plastic on the outside are only a small part of it.

To me this vehicle looks just like an X5 and I’m sure that crash tests will be almost as good as the real X5.

Just hope the Chinese copy everything, sometimes they copy the big things and to save cost, ignore the smaller things, so customers will get disappointed. Eg. BMW may have have electric buttons, but on the copycat, you get only a picture of the buttons. hahaha

Well, I doubt the Chinese one could be much less reliable than my real X5, with all the problems its had. And, I’d bet the Chinese manufacturer is probably more customer-oriented than BMW has been to me.

When you look closely, there are LOTs of differences between the two…rear side windows, taillamps, rear bumper, tailgate, etc. etc.

This thing will never handle like a BMW. It may resemble a BMW but will never drive like one. I recently purchased my first BMW after driving Honda’s and Toyota’s for the past decade. There is nothing like the feel of a BMW on the road.

copies do not last … what would worry the other carmakers is how chinese autos will be like in 10-15 years given hyper-catch up advancement in their technology and progress.

back in 1990, korean cars were laughing stock, lexus was just starting and toyota wasn’t world’s no. 1 … and in the 70s, toyopets were well, toys, american cars were cooler than euros and russia was a superpower …

So far, every crash test these POS chi-com things have been in they have failed miserably.

But really, all SUV’s look the same to me - just shoe boxes on wheels. They all look like conspicuous consumption. In Los Angeles I rarely see more than 1 or 2 people driving in them. They consume 4-5 more resources than my car. It’s disgusting original or copy.
