The Washington Post reports that today CEO Steve Ballmer and Microsoft Corporation will try to convince U.S. regulators that vacant television airwaves can be used for wireless services without interfering with broadcast signals.
This will be Microsoft’s second attempt to convince the Federal Communications Commission to see things their way.
Microsoft is disputing the agency’s recent finding that prototype Internet devices caused static on existing broadcasts, claiming that the initial prototype was “defective,” but a new model works correctly.
Broadcasters are due to switch from analog to digital signals by early 2009. Microsoft and others are asking the FCC to allow the unused TV airwaves to be put up for grabs.
Microsoft, Google, Intel and other tech titans have been trying to get the FCC to make the vacant airwaves available for use without a license. Broadcasters however, have expressed concerns about potential interference with their signals.
