Jimbo is to be congratulated. Change only occurs when people are brave enough to push for the change. By bowing to Chinese censorship, Google and Yahoo have tacitly said “Yep, we want your money and we don’t care about censorship or human rights.” Bravo Jimbo for standing up for the oppressed.

The truth is even if Google or Yahoo! decided to leave the market, that wouldn’t make a difference since a company like Baidu or another local Chinese portal would be more than happy to get the extra market share AND censor it.

Wikipedia doesn’t write anything. Individuals edit the posts themselves. See as there are few people who actually read mainland china news papers AND have access to Wikipedia, it is unlikely that wikipedia, or any of its users, would even know what is written in a chinese new paper. I’m sorry but most likely Baidu is stealing content from other sources and reprinting it in china as original for the purpose of saving time and effort.
Go figure, a chinese company stealing something and reproducing as its own. FYI wikipedia isn’t really copy-write material anyways so its not like Baidu would even have to ask permission to reprint it. I’m sure I will catch a lot of flack for this comment but in the industrial world of equipment manufacturers this is actually a very common practice for red china. It would’ve been impossible for the heads of Google and Yahoo to convince their boards and shareholders to abandon business in China. They’re both large cap tech companies that need to turn a profit, you can’t blame them for being practical.

Boycotting China as a website is pointless. Their wouldn’t be a public outcry, because the public can’t miss what they never had so their would be no public outcry.
Besides this, the people in China who actually want this information, will get it another way (a.k.a. proxy servers etc)

Wikipedia gets information all the time that they’re not supposed to have up there, and if they receive a letter stating so they usually take it down.

As Will stated above, Google and Yahoo (and MSN) are corporations which LEGALLY must answer to their shareholders. If Anyone one of the three major search engines decided not try and server China, the shareholders can legally sue. Wikipedia is a nonprofit corporation and does not have to worry about such matters.

Don’t sensor it, only show the unchanged original content in China, and if they don’t like it, their communist government can force ISPs to block the site. Jimmy Wales is being disingenuous. He says he will talk to Chinese officials about unblocking his website..he must know that as of now it isn’t being filtered.

There is no way Wikipedia could ever comply with even the slightest modifications of content to please the Chinese government as the material on the site is user created.
It would be impossible to ensure nothing offensive was ever posted.
